Cyclone Hockey splits Oklahoma series, ends with win

Cyclone Hockey defeated Oklahoma 2-1 Sept. 20 to split its series with the Sooners.

The No. 5 ranked Cyclones (1-1-0 ACHA) had 11 shots in the first period while the No. 4 ranked Sooners (1-1-0 ACHA) had six. Iowa State could not capitalize on the power play late in the first and the period ended with the score 0-0.

Iowa State came out strong and took a 1-0 lead only five minutes into the second period. Alec Wilhelmi put the puck in the back of the net from 40 feet out. The Cyclones carried the momentum throughout the period and kept their 1-0 lead.

Alternate captain Trevor Lloyd scored 8 minutes into the third period giving the Cyclone Hockey a 2-0 lead. The Sooners scored 3 minutes later on a power play goal from Mico Solorzano.

Iowa State held onto the lead with a strong performance from goalie Matt Cooper with a 2-1 win. 

Up next, Iowa State will take on Chinese team HC Harbin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 and 27 at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
