The Lowdown

The ISU volleyball team (6-3, 0-0 Big 12) swept in-state rival Iowa (8-3, 0-0 Big Ten) to extend its lead in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series and preserve head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch’s unbeaten record against the Hawkeyes.

The first two sets were hotly contested. As one team seemed to build momentum to pull away, the other fought back to stay competitive. Iowa State prevailed in both frames by scores of 25-23 and 25-22.

Following the break, Iowa State was able to pull earlier and establish a 16-10 lead, forcing Iowa into a timeout.

The strategic timeout from the Hawkeyes proved unfruitful, as the Cyclones began to appear dominant from that point. Iowa State went on to take the set 25-15.

X-Factor

Ciara Capezio: The sophomore outside hitter had a match-high 15 kills en route to a .265 hitting percentage. Capezio also chipped in six digs and a service ace for the Cyclones.

By the Numbers

47: Iowa State hit home 47 kills in the match, compared to Iowa’s 33. The Cyclones were led by Capezio with 15 and freshman Alexis Conaway with 10.

50: The Cyclones totaled 50 digs as a team, with every ISU athlete who played registering at least one. Libero Caitlin Nolan led the charge in digs with 14.

.029: Iowa’s hitting percentage in the final frame. The Iowa offense became ineffective late, tallying just seven kills with six errors on 35 attacks.

7-0: Iowa State’s lead in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series. The ISU volleyball team is the third program to top Iowa this year, following the soccer and football teams.

0: The number of head coaches with names as cool as Iowa’s Bond Shymansky.

Up Next

The Cyclones take on another in-state foe Sept. 24 when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to face the University of Northern Iowa Panthers.
