Concert Review: Nova Labs at Maximum Ames

Nicole Presley

Nova Labs, a local record label, showcased some of their bands at Deano’s on Sept. 27.

Deano’s, a small bar on Main Street, never really got packed during all of the sets played Saturday night, but the small crowd that did show up looked like they had a good time.

Jordan Mayland began the evening equipped with only himself, his electric guitar and a harmonica. His songs weren’t terribly exciting, but were a good fit for those moseying into the bar. Every song received an applause.

Liana followed Mayland’s, but the set wasn’t quite convincing. The guitar was turned up too loud, so it drowned out guest vocalist’s mic, Chloe, whenever she sang. Also, her microphone needed to be turned up. Other members of the band were easily heard during their set while I struggled to hear her.

Chloe also looked a little scared to be on the small stage. She hardly looked into the crowd, spending most of her time looking at the ceiling or over the tops of the crowd’s heads. While the band’s sound was a little off, the small crowd still applauded after every song.

Moonrabbit played next, and in comparison, played significantly better. While some of the harmonized parts of their music wasn’t quite on key, all of the singers could be heard clearly. Again, the crowd payed their respects after every song with applause.

Obsidian’s Dream took the stage next and truly did a good job. Harmonization was never an issue and the piano and trumpet sounded pretty spectacular. Toward the end of their set they played their own version of the Charlie Brown theme song, which was cute and entertaining.

Secret Freedom now finally takes the small stage in Deano’s and is completely different from the rest of the bands in both music and style of dress. Their clothing reminded me of the psychedelic 1960s and 70s and their music was almost always upbeat.

While there were three women singing, it was still a little hard to hear them at times during their performance. Despite this, the crowd danced to every song they played.
