Student Legal Services

Saige Heyer

Sometimes students run into problems in which they need legal advice, whether they’re being charged with something or not. To help students avoid costly legal fees, the Dean of Students Office provides Student Legal Services, which is completely funded by the Government of the Student Body.

The services offered include:

• Family law and divorce

• Criminal law

• Landlord-tenant problems

• Off-campus employment problems

• Consumer issues

• Administrative issues

• Notary services

These services are free of charge to students and registered ISU student groups. Students do, however, have to pay their own court costs and any other out-of-pocket expenses they may accrue.

If you find yourself needing legal advice, you can visit the Student Legal Services office at 0367 Memorial Union or call it at 515-294-0978. Confidentiality and privacy are important. Therefore, students cannot get advice via email.

Cases the Student Legal Services office cannot represent but may be able to provide consultation for include:

• Fee-generating cases

• Student versus student cases

• Student versus ISU cases

• ISU student judicial matters

• Felony defense

• Cases involving excessive time

When meeting with an attorney for a consultation, make sure to bring any documents that may help your case. Also make sure to document what you discussed with your attorney. There are two attorneys at Student Legal Services.
