What you missed in ISU sports

Beau Berkley

While most of the student body spent their summers sitting poolside, working or just soaking in the sweet sensation of not having any responsibility, a few things happened in the world of ISU sports. Here’s a quick roundup of what happened while you were gone:

Christina Hillman wins NCAA Outdoor Championship

ISU track and field member Christina Hillman took home her second career NCAA title June 14 when she won the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Her final throw of 58 feet, 2 inches was not only good enough to win her a national champion, but it also made her the record holder for longest throw in the ISU women’s program. Hillman’s victory also made her the third track and field member to win both indoor and outdoor titles in the same event.

Jets draft George

Former linebacker and All-Big 12 first team selection Jeremiah George was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL draft by the New York Jets on May 10. In his senior season at Iowa State, George led the team in tackles with 133, tackles for loss with 12.0, forced fumbles with 3, sacks with 3.5 and interceptions with 2. On May 15, George signed a four-year contract worth $2.4 million as well as a $192,000 signing bonus.

ISU Athletes of the Year

Former ISU basketball player Melvin Ejim and ISU track and field member Christina Hillman were named ISU Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Ejim, an All-American in 2014, led the Cyclones to a Big 12 Championship and Sweet 16 appearance. Hillman made history in 2014 by winning two national titles in the shot put and breaking the team record for longest shot put throw.

Christofferson heads to Europe

Hallie Christofferson, a three-time All-Big 12 first teamer while at Iowa State, signed on to play for the Flying Foxes in Vienna, Austria. Christofferson spent two weeks working out with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury before deciding to play for the Flying Foxes.
