Fall 2014 Video games

From action-filled major titles like “Dark Souls II,” “The Elder Scrolls Online” and “Titanfall” to family and casual games like “Hearthstone” and “Mario Kart 8,” 2014 has been a big year for gaming. But with school starting up again and the holidays rolling in, fall 2014 is looking to get even more epic.

Unfortunately, August’s major titles only include a Playstation and XBox release of the “Diablo III” expansion “Reaper of Souls” as well as the expected addition to the sports genre with “Madden NFL 15.” September will feature a few large titles as well, with releases such as “Sims 4,” “NHL 15” and “Hyrule Warriors,” a spinoff of the “Legend of Zelda” series from the creators of “Dynasty Warriors” for WiiU.

As the weather cools in October, however, things will be heating up in the virtual world. “Alien: Isolation” will be entering the survival-horror genre while “Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor” will allow gamers to adopt wraith and ranger abilities to possess and slay Sauron’s armies. Meanwhile, sports fanatics will be receiving “NBA Live 15” along with “NBA 2K15” and “WWE 2K15.”

“The Evil Within” will be joining the survival-horror genre later in the month while first-person shooters gear up for “Battlefield Hardline.” Strategists still reeling from nuclear war with “Gandhi” will be pleased to be waging interstellar, futuristic conquest in “Civilization: Beyond Earth.” Meanwhile, casual gamers will be jamming out and dancing to “Problem,” “Happy” and “She Looks So Perfect” in “Just Dance 2015.”

Revolution is in the air as “Assassin’s Creed: Unity” takes us to the streets of Paris in 1789 where the young assassin Arno will fight to uncover the truth of the uprising and fight the Templar influence. Fantasy gamers will be taking up the sword against the Red Templar and Venatori as a human, dwarf, elf or Qunari Inquisitor in “Dragon Age: Inquisition.”

The story and transformation of the depraved Handsome Jack will be the feature of the upcoming “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel” while “Bayonetta 2” will feature the angel-slaying, gun-slinging witch in an epic mission to rescue her friend Jeanne from the pits of hell.

As we enter November, first-person shooters will get to work as an ex-Marine mercenary under the command of a CEO and political idealist voiced by Kevin Spacey in “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.” First-person shooters and adventure gamers will be embroiled in Kyrat’s civil war as they fight against the regime of Pagan Min in “Far Cry 4.” Finishing off the month of November will be the remastered third-generation games of “Pokemon Omega Ruby” and “Alpha Sapphire” along with “LittleBigPlanet 3” and the “Sonic Boom” games.

Unfortunately, an official release date has not been confirmed for several major titles, including the remade “One Grand Theft Auto V” and “Super Smash Bros.” for PS4 and Xbox along with a new version of “World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor” for WiiU, but rest assured that they will be released this year, probably just in time for Christmas.

Nevertheless, 2014 will finish with a solid list of games. So stock up on the Mountain Dew and Doritos and prepare to explore and fight your way to glory.
