Missing Ames man, Thomas Dooley, 21, was located March 20.

Jason Tuttle, patrol commander for the Ames Police Department, said Dooley turned himself in at the Ames Police Department around 1:15 p.m.

“I think he knew that he had some warrants for his arrest, too. So I’m assuming he got to the point where he didn’t want to hide out anymore,” Tuttle said.

Ames police issued a report for Dooley Feb. 12 when Dooley’s father filed a missing person report after friends and family had not seen or heard from him since Jan. 31.

Dooley’s former girlfriend had filed domestic assault charges against him on that date and was the last to see Dooley before he had gone missing. Friends and family believed Dooley had gone missing of his own volition.

Tuttle said Dooley did not provide much information when turning himself in and did not state where he had been during the months he was missing, though friends and family suspected Arizona or California.

Dooley faces charges of domestic assault, obstruction of emergency communication and false imprisonment.

A judge will set a bond amount based on the charges at his initial appearance, and Dooley will have a hearing at a later date.
