After one round at the Hurricane Invitational, the ISU women’s golf team put together one of its best rounds of the year, placing the Cyclones near the top of the leaderboard.

On the heels of a ninth-place finish two weeks ago in Puerto Rico, the Cyclones find themselves alone in second place, only one shot behind No. 30 Miami heading into the second round on March 4.

On March 3, a team effort contributed to Iowa State’s success. All five starters finished inside the top-25 at day’s end and carded rounds of 73 or better.

Senior Sasikarn On-iam led the ISU attack in posting a three-under-par round of 69. Her round puts her in a tie for second-place individually and one stroke behind Daniela Darquea of Miami.

Aided by two closing birdies on holes 17 and 18, On-iam posted her first sub-70 round of the season.

Fellow senior Prima Thammaraks also finds herself in the top 10. After the team’s last tournament in Puerto Rico, Thammaraks said avoiding big numbers and salvaging bogies and pars would be the key for her going forward.

She was able to achieve that March 3, posting three birdies and no scores of double-bogie or higher. She enters the second round tied for eighth place.

Sophomore Cajsa Persson ties for 15th place after carding a one-over-par round of 72. Persson’s card featured four birdies and five bogies.

Junior Chonlada Chayanun and freshman Carmen Vidau posted a pair of two-over-par 73’s, good for a tie for 24th place. After one round, Vidau is on pace to improve upon her highest finish of the year, a tie for 32nd at the Landfall Tradition in October.

Freshman Pimrawee Huang is also competing as an individual. In her second tournament, Huang posted a first-round total of 90, good for 96th place.

The tournament’s field consists of 18 teams and 96 players.

All five of Iowa State’s starters shot below the first-round course average of 75.

Each of the five Cyclones also birdied the par-5 18th hole, statistically the easiest hole on the course in round one (-0.41 strokes under-par).

Second round play will resume March 4 with the final round being held March 5.
