ISU forward Georges Niang broke his fifth metatarsal in his right foot late in the second half on Friday night and is done for the season.

Iowa State’s lead trainer Vic Miller confirmed after the game that Niang is done for the season. Niang said the injury occurred when he stepped on a player’s foot.

“I broke my fifth metatarsal in my right foot,” Niang said after the game. “I landed on someone’s foot the wrong way and I felt a sharp pain and that’s just how it happened.”

Niang scored a game-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting before he left the game with 7:34 left in the second half and added six rebounds and four assists.

“These things happen,” Niang said. “It’s part of the game and you have to respect it, so whatever I’m told to do by the training staff, that’s what I’m going to do.”

It hurts. I’m hurting. But it hurts more (mentally) than it does physically.”

Iowa State is set to play North Carolina in the round of 32 at 4:15 p.m. Sunday on CBS.
