After showing resiliency after a poor start to its first tournament at UCF last weekend, Iowa State’s struggles persisted for all three rounds at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.

With rounds of 296, 298 and 301, No. 22 Iowa State finished in ninth place out of 15 teams, 28 shots behind wire-to-wire winner, No. 8 Arkansas.

Heading into the final round on Feb. 18, senior Prima Thammaraks was in a tie for fifth place and only four shots behind leader Aurora Kan of Purdue.

Thammaraks continued her strong play with a birdie on her first hole of the day, but had little success for the rest of the round. Two double-bogies and one triple-bogey in her next nine holes led to a seven-over-par round of 79, her second-highest round of the season.

Despite a rocky third round, Thammaraks tied with junior Chonlada Chayanun for the best finish of the team, a tie for 17th place.

Chayanun had the cleanest scorecard of the team, posting a final round of 72. Her even-par round tied for the sixth-best round Feb. 18, a day where the course average was 76.46.

For the third consecutive day, senior Sasikarn On-iam posted a score of 74 to finish in a tie for 20th place. On-iam and Chayanun were the only two Cyclone golfers to beat the course average in all three rounds.

On-iam also led the team in fewest holes of bogey or worse in the tournament, with eight.

Along with On-iam, sophomore Cajsa Persson also shot the same score in every round, posting a trio of 77’s to finish in a tie for 50th place.

Freshman Carmen Vidau was the fifth starter for the Cyclones in Puerto Rico, and after a 79 on Feb. 16, Vidau finished in a tie for 63rd individually. With each team’s top four scores considered for team competition, her final total of 235 did not count towards team scoring.

Iowa State’s struggles against top-25 teams continued in Puerto Rico. Four out of the five top-25 teams in the Golfstat rankings that were in the field finished above Iowa State, with only No. 25 Kent State finishing below the Cyclones.

After the Cyclones ninth-place finish, their comparative season record stands at 260-31, with a 4-21 record against top-25 opponents.

Kan and Stephanie Meadow of Alabama earned co-medalist honors with a five-under-par total for the tournament.

The Cyclones will next compete in Miami, Fla. at the Hurricane Invitational on March 3-5.
