Second round struggles drop ISU women’s golf out of title contention

After a solid first-round that put the Iowa State women’s golf team in third place, the demanding Rio Mar Country Club course got the best of the Cyclones in round two of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.

On a day where an under-par round was necessary to stay in title contention, No. 22 Iowa State dropped down to a tie for fifth place after a ten-over-par team total of 298.

Though the Cyclones only shot two strokes above their first round total of 296, the field’s overall scoring average was down 1.37 strokes in round two, leading to Iowa State’s descent down the leaderboard.

More importantly, No. 8 Arkansas, the round-one leader, shot the best round of the tournament in the second round. The Razorbacks’ five-under-par total of 283 helped build a 13-shot lead on second place and a 23-shot lead on Iowa State.

Despite the struggles the Cyclones have faced, senior Prima Thammaraks has been a bright spot.

In last weekend’s UCF Challenge, Thammaraks has recorded four consecutive rounds of par or better, including an even-par round of 72 on Monday.

Thammaraks stands at one-under-par for the tournament and will enter Feb. 18’s final round in the hunt for an individual title, just four shots behind leader Aurora Kan of Purdue.

No other Cyclones posted a round of par or better in the first two rounds.

Despite two rounds above par, senior Sasikarn On-iam bested the course average in both rounds, carding two rounds of 74 on Feb. 16 and 17, good for a tie for 23rd place.

Junior Chonlada Chayanun also found herself on the upper portion of the leaderboard heading into the final round. Chayanun recorded rounds of 74 and 75, good for a tie for 27th place.

Sophomore Cajsa Persson and freshman Carmen Vidau rounded out the starting lineup for Iowa State. Both shot a 77 on Feb. 17, and Persson stands in a tie for 49th place with a 154 total. Vidau is in a tie for 59th place with a 156 total.
