The Iowa State women’s golf team entered the day ten strokes behind leader UCF, but a record-setting second round allowed for a surge up the leaderboard during Monday’s second round of the UCF Challenge.

A team score of 7-under-par for a total of 281 was good enough to be the second-lowest in team history and best overall round of any team through two rounds. It allowed the Cyclones to jump from a tie for eighth place to alone in third place heading into Tuesday’s final round.

On Monday, junior Chonlada Chayanun and senior Prima Thammaraks led the way in a round in which every Cyclone improved on their first round score.

The duo of Chayanun and Thammaraks both recorded 3-under-par rounds of 69, besting their first round scores by four and six shots, respectively.

Chayanun will enter the final round in a tie for ninth place, five shots behind leader Fanny Cnops of UCF.

Senior Sasikarn On-Iam also recorded an under-par round, posting a 1-under total of 71, aided by three consecutive birdies on holes 2 through 4, her 14th, 15th and 16th holes of the day.

Freshman Carmen Vidau improved upon her first round of 79 by seven strokes, good for an even-par round, the best of her career.

Heading into Tuesday’s final round, Iowa State’s top four golfers, Chayanun, Persson, On-iam and Thammaraks, are all in the top 20 in the individual competition and are within seven shots of the lead.
