Album Review: Crosses †††

Dominic Spizzirri

Crosses ††† is a — what appears to be one of many — side project of the Deftones member, Chino Moreno, and Far members Shaun Lopez and Chuck Doom. This side project is an electronic art style band that is nothing short of amazing.

The debut self-titled album from Crosses ††† can be described in one word: fantastic. The — what should be trademarked — vocal style of Moreno is haunting and perfect for this style of music. Moreno is known for the guitar blasting band Deftones, so hearing his voice over keyboards and minimal guitar is a change, and it is a fantastic element to the band.

Most of the songs on Crosses ††† have been released before on their first two extended plays from the band, “†” and “††.” That being said, this album is long. Ranging 15 tracks, the album feels like it never ends at times, but there was never a time where I felt like the song in particular was bad. It can also be noted that the albums’ tracks go in the same order repeated: from a song on the first EP, to the second EP, then an exclusive album song before repeated that sequence over and over until the end. Also in typical Crosses †††’s fashion, every song substitutes the letter ‘t’ for a ‘†’ symbol.

Every song sticks out on this album and can be played at random on a playlist or shuffle and feel at home. Songs like the lead single, “Bi†ches Brew” and “Op†ion” are two of my favorites. This album has many more songs that I have played over and over.

For anybody looking for a different kind of band, or looking for something new from Deftones/Far members or for anyone who is simply a fan of Nine Inch Nails,  Crosses ††† is worth a listen, many listens.
