Cyclone Hockey wins a close game in Cy-Hawk opener

A goal by forward Seth Serhienko was all the Cyclone Hockey team needed to take the first game of the Cy-Hawk series.

The No. 10 Cyclones (27-8-2, 11-5-0 CSCHL) were able to squeak out a 1-0 win in close game against the in-state rival Hawkeyes (13-9-1) on Friday.

The Cyclones were able to control the first period despite not being able to score by keeping the pressure on UI goalie Alex Wisnousky at net. Iowa State fired 10 shots on goal against Wisnousky. Iowa only had three shots on goal against goalie Matt Cooper.

In the second period, the Cyclones again outshot the Hawkeyes at the net. But unlike in the first, Iowa State was able to score when Serhienko shot the puck past Wisnousky 16:10 into the period.

The Cyclones were able to hold on to their one-goal lead throughout the third, as Cooper picked up a shutout on the night.

Iowa State will complete the series against Iowa tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
