The ISU women’s cross-country team competed in its fourth consecutive NCAA Championship on Saturday morning in Terre Haute, Ind. The Cyclones finished 13th overall with 333 points.

Crystal Nelson and Bethanie Brown led the ISU women’s squad, with both runners earning All-American honors. Nelson came in 32nd place with a time of 20:42. Brown finished in 37th with a time of 20:43.

“Being an All-American means just so much,” Nelson said. “I think I was in like the 200’s or something at last years nationals, and this year it just feels awesome to finish top 40. I really trusted in coaches and my team this year, and I knew that it could be achieved”

Katy Moen, Samantha Bluske, and Perez Rotich were the other three scoring runners for the Cyclones. They finished in 77th, 139th and 158th, respectively.

“I mean I think we were capable of doing better, but I’m proud of the team,” Nelson said. “We’re pretty much coming back with the same team next year, so I’m pretty excited for that. Overall I’m happy with how we did today.”

The men’s team sent one individual to the national meet. Mohamed Hrezi finished 24th overall with a time of 30:53. Hrezi finished fourth at the regional meet last week, earning him an individual bid to nationals.

“Mo did an excellent job executing his race plan today,” said ISU coach Martin Smith in a release. “In these types of conditions it was important to establish a strong position early.”

Hrezi earned All-American status, becoming the 23rd Cyclone to do so. The senior was also the first to earn the honors since 2008.

“I’m just so excited,” Hrezi said in the release. “I was very nervous before the race, never having been on a stage like this. I came in with my personal goal of top-40 in mind, and nothing was going to stop me today.”
