The first dual of the season got off to a slow start for the ISU wrestling team as they dropped the first three matches against Drexel but came back to win 24-16.

Iowa State was down 10-0 before storming back and getting the eight-point win.

After Luke Goettl gave the Cyclones six points off of a forfeit win at 149 pounds, Logan Molina and Michael Moreno both got wins and gave Iowa State a 14-10 lead after six matches.

The Cyclones continued to hammer the Dragons for the next three matches, as newcomer Lelund Weatherspoon and All-American Kyven Gadson both secured victories. No. 8 Tanner Weatherman also earned a 10-4 win at 174 pounds.

Quean Smith was the only blemish on the backend of the weights, as he was pinned five minutes into the match.

Iowa State is set to take on Grand View at 7:30 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.

Grand View

Things started off faster for the Cyclones against defending NAIA national champion Grand View, as wins from Kyle Larson and Dakota Bauer gave Iowa State a 7-0 lead out of the gate.

The Vikings would battle back after Gustavo Martinez defeated Gabe Moreno and Isaiah Tatum got a pin against Goettl. However the Cyclones’ John Nicholson answered right back by getting a pin against Quentin Haynes followed by a 5-2 victory at 165 pounds by Michael Moreno, an All-American.

Weatherman dropped a close 6-4 battle against Jimmie Schuessler just before Gadson put things out of reach for the Vikings by securing a 10-3 win, putting the Cyclones up 22-12.

Eric Thompson, a former Cyclone, ended the night with a pin against Iowa State’s Ben Perna to end the meet at 22-18.

Iowa State is scheduled to take on Midland and West Virginia in a double dual on Nov. 15 at Hilton Coliseum.
