Most recently known for his role as Captain Pike in “Star Trek” and “Star Trek Into Darkness,” Bruce Greenwood stars as Joe McCandless in “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.”

Written by Stephen King, with music and lyrics by John Mellencamp, and musical direction by T Bone Burnett, “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County” has a southern gothic theme.

Joe McCandless, a father of two sons, moves his family back to the cabin he and his brothers lived in 40 years ago.  McCandless’s brothers had a fight over a woman, which eventually lead to all three of their deaths in 1967.

McCandless sees his own sons fighting the same battle and is the only one who knows about his brother’s deaths. He cannot decide whether or not to tell his family about the secret he has been hiding for 40 years.

McCandless struggles to save his family from the same fate his older brothers had suffered.

“He’s a guy who’s been slowly crushed by a 40-year-old secret and this is his last chance to tell the truth and he’s pretty wound up about it,” Greenwood said.

Before the show Greenwood said he gets into character by “musing over the corrosive nature of secrets and the elusive nature of redemption.“

When “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County” started casting for the show, Greenwood took the opportunity.

“[It was a] chance to work with John and Stephen and do some of Jon’s music within the context of telling a larger story, particularly one as told by Stephen, with such a dark point of view,” Greenwood said.

Now that “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County” is near the end of their tour with only three more performances left after Saturday, Greenwood plans on spending the time in leisure.

“I’m going to Montreal to shoot a wonderful script by Nicolas Billon called ‘Elephant Song.’ Then it’s Christmas, the fireplace, mulled wine, reading, playing the guitar and catching up with friends and family,” Greenwood said.

The musical is at Stephens Auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 2.
