ISU tennis finishes fall play with collections of wins at Cougar Classic

The ISU tennis team finished its fall season Sunday, Nov. 3, in Houston at the Cougar Classic and picked up a few wins.

On Friday, Nov. 1, Samantha Budai, Ksenia Pronina and Emma Waites recorded wins for the Cyclones.

Pronina defeated Maryland’s Alexandra Stanova, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (5). Budai, a freshman, defeated Laura Servise of Stephen F. Austin, 7-5, 6-1.

Waites, a senior, also earned a win after returning to her first competition since the UNI Invitational. She defeated Erika Bond of Prairie View A&M, 6-2, 6-0.

On Saturday, Nov. 2, Iowa State earned a spot in the final consolation rounds for both double pairings.

Budai and Ana Gasparovic defeated Malena Gordo and Andrea Ternera of Stephen F. Austin, 8-4 for the first ISU doubles win in the tournament. 

Pronina and Waites received a bye on Saturday for their doubles pairings but were set to play on Sunday in the consolation finals as well.

For the singles rounds on Saturday, Iowa State left the court with a win from Gasparovic, who defeated Hannah Elfving of Lamar, 6-4, 6-4.

Returning on Sunday for the doubles consolation finals rounds, the ISU team of Waites and Pronina won against Texas State’s Berenice VandenBergh and Eva Dench, 8-5. 

Budai and Gasparovic lost to Rice’s Liat Zimmerman and Alison Ho, 8-4.

The tournament ended with all four players winning their final single matches.

Pronina defeated Maria Jose Cardona of Kansas State, 6-3, 2-6, 10-3. She took third place in her bracket after her loss on Saturday. Budai beat Texas State’s Monica Pieratt, 6-3, 6-4 and finished third in her bracket as well.

Waites also took down her opponent Rachel Pierce from Stephen F. Austin 7-5, 6-2. Her win placed her third place in her bracket after following her loss to NSU’s Kateryna Piatakova on Saturday.

Gasparovic came back on Sunday to defeat Stephen F. Austin’s Valeria Terentyava, 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-6.

The Cyclones will return Jan. 17 in Fort Myers, Fla., against Florida Golf Coast.
