How to Avoid Holiday Stress

Lindsey Ruszczyk

As the holidays approach, our calendars become more cluttered and our to-do lists grow longer. From gift giving to holiday parties and family obligations, everything can add up pretty quickly. Although the holidays are one of the most joyful times of the year, they can also be one of the most stressful. Beat the stress this holiday season with these simple tips.

1. Plan ahead. Get your shopping done early. Create a list of exactly which gifts you need to get and for whom. Make sure to plan your menus and make your shopping lists ahead of time to prevent last-minute scrambling to buy forgotten items.

2. Stick to a budget. Before you start your holiday shopping, plan out a budget and decide exactly how much you can afford to spend. Then stick to it.

3. Manage your time. Set aside specific days and times for shopping, baking, visiting friends and family, and any other holiday activities. Maintaining a calendar or planner will help you keep track of everything that is going on.

4. Learn to say no. Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Friends and family will understand if you can’t participate in or attend every single holiday activity so only choose those that are most important to you.

5. Take a break. The holidays can leave even the most organized person feeling flustered. Read a book, go for a walk, attend a yoga class, or get a massage to help you recharge and refocus.

6. Maintain healthy habits. Stick to a regular sleep and exercise schedule and don’t use the holidays as an excuse to overindulge on treats. Having a healthy snack before holiday parties will help keep your appetite under control and make it easier to resist sugary temptations.

7. Give back. Volunteering your time for those less fortunate will put things into perspective and help you remember what the holiday season is really all about.
