5 from ISU tennis finish third or better at UNI Invite

The ISU women’s tennis team wrapped up competition at the UNI Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

Going into the final day of competition, the Cyclones had four players competing for championships in their respective brackets, and another competing in a third place match.

Two Cyclones faced off in the T.C. bracket championship match, with senior Emma Waites defeating fellow Cyclone Caroline Andersen, 7-6(4), 1-6, 1-0(6).

Freshman Lydia Green took 2nd in the UNI bracket, falling to Maddie Ballion of Illinois State, 7-5, 6-1, in the championship match. Green took third last weekend in her first college tournament.

Junior Megan Cassens also finished as a runner up, falling to Kadi Ilves of Illinois State, 6-4, 6-3, in the Panthers bracket.

Freshman Samantha Budai finished in third place in the Gold bracket. She has finished in third in both of her first two college tournaments.

In doubles action, the duo of Budai and Cassens lost their first match in the Purple Doubles bracket, before winning out in the consolation rounds.

Green and Waites teamed up in the Panthers doubles bracket and finished in third place.

The Cyclones have next weekend off before heading to the Arizona Tournament on Oct. 11.
