ISU Theatre presents production schedule for 2013

Get ready for another year of performances as presented by the ISU Theatre. This year the department will be showcasing an eclectic selection of acts from around the world. From Austria to Russia, early modern to contemporary; the lineup offers something all ages can enjoy.

Jane Cox, director of Iowa State’s theater program, said she is “looking forward to presenting them to the audience.”

“The theater department tries to rotate its choices of plays to ensure the audience and students that perform in them have the opportunity to experience all different types,” Cox said.

Of these choices: Shakespeare, opera, new musicals and small musicals fall under this rotation regimen.

The Seagull” was written by the 19th century Russian dramatist, Anton Chekhov. This play is centered on four main characters that are caught up in love triangles and their artistic works. Being a comedy, laughter will be your companion for this performance.

This year’s chosen Broadway hit, a recipient of the Tony Award, is the musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” The musical started as an improvisational play and was later turned into a scripted musical full of quirky characters struggling to spell their given words.

ISU will also perform “Romeo & Juliet,” the story of two teens battling with their families and declaring their love for one another. Shakespeare presents a cavalcade of relatable themes full of suspense.

Musicians and those who enjoy music should mark their calendars for “Amadeus,” a play centered — though mostly fictionalized — on the lives of rival musicians Mozart and Antonio Salieri. “Amadeus” falls under the tragedy genre and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Into the Woods” is the official selection for Stars Over Veishea in 2014 and tells the story of popular fairy tales with a twist. Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella are just two characters that must face the consequences of their wishes while embarking on adventures.

My Grandparents in the War” will be an original production directed and written by ISU’s very own Matt Foss.

Based on a true story, Foss focuses on his grandparents’ courtship and their personal experiences during World War II. He incorporates the hardships they faced afterward that will surely fill the viewer with admiration.
