ISU women finish ninth at NCAA Indoor Championships

The Iowa State women’s track and field team wrapped up its competitions on Saturday in at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Cyclones entered day two of competition tied for 13th in the women’s standings with eight total points. Nick Efkamp and Edward Kemboi of the ISU men’s team did not advance to the second day of competition.

Sophomore Christina Hillman finished second in the shot put, setting a school record and a personal record with a final throw of 58-0 1/2 feet to win eight team points for Iowa State.

ISU senior Danielle Frere finished 14th in the competition with a best throw of 52-10 3/4 meters. Oklahoma’s Tia Brooks, the Big 12 champion in the shot put, won first place.

Betsy Saina, who finished second in the 5,000-meter run on Friday, finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:07.34. Saina finished third in the event last year.

Abbey D’Agostina from Dartmouth, who ousted Saina in Friday’s 5,000-meter run, finished first in the 3,000 with a time of 9:01.88.

Ejiro Okoro competed and finished seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:05.44. The senior made her first appearance at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The Cyclone women ended the competition with 23 total team points, good enough for ninth place overall. Oregon finished first with a total of 56 team points and has won four consecutive indoor national championships.
