A streak that extends back to 2009 has come to an end.

The No. 13 ISU hockey team snapped a 13-game losing streak against Lindenwood on Friday night. The Cyclones beat the Lions 5-4 with a late third period goal by ISU forward David Kurbatsky. Matt Cooper was the starting goalie for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones started fast with a goal by Matt Bennett just two minutes into the first period. Lindenwood struck back quickly with a goal to tie it up at one. The Cyclones showed no signs of being rattled though. Mike Dopko scored for the Cyclones to put them back on top 2-1.

12:26 into the first period, the Cyclones went up by two with a goal by J.P. Kascsak. The assists on Kascsak’s goal were credited to Matt Szpak and Austin Parle That was the first of two assists from Parle in the game. Cooper stopped seven of eight LU shots in the first period.

The second period had a different feel to it. LU defenseman Daniel Walcott put the puck past Cooper to bring the Lions within one early in the period.

11:04 into the period, the Lions struck again. This time LU forward Tim Hennessey found the back of the net to tie the game.

The Cyclones were held scoreless in the second period and Cooper stopped nine of 11 LU shots.

Iowa State got on the board early with a goal from Ryan Reid. ISU defenseman Cory Sellers threw the puck to the front of the net from the blue line and Reid found it in the slot and put it past the LU goaltender to give the Cyclones a 4-3 lead.

The Lions tied it at four with a goal 13:02 into the second period, but Kurbatsky found the back of the net with 22 seconds left in the game to give the Cyclones the win. Cooper stopped 20 of 24 LU shots in the game.

Iowa State plays Lindenwood again tomorrow night at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena at 8 p.m.
