Cyclones complete home sweep of Lindenwood

On Friday night, they were trying to get a win against Lindenwood after 13 straight losses against them, and they did it. On Saturday, Feb. 9, they celebrated a sweep of the Lions.

The No. 13 ISU hockey team (20-15-3) beat No. 7 Lindenwood (13-11-4) 4-1 on Saturday night. ISU goaltender Matt Cooper started for the third consecutive game and stopped 24 of 25 LU shots. Jon Feavel and Ryan Reid had two points each (one goal, one assist) in the game.

ISU captain Brandon Clark played in the game after sitting out on Friday. He had a groin pull and ISU coach Al Murdoch said they are using him sparingly. Joe Bueltel has played in five of the Cyclones’ last six games after a concussion kept him out of the Cyclones’ games between Dec. 8, 2012, and Jan. 25.

Lindenwood started fast with a first-period goal from Steve Brancheau. Joe Kalisz had the assist on Brancheau’s goal.

The Cyclones struck back just over three minutes later when ISU forward David Elliston chopped at a puck in front of the net until it got past LU goaltender Kirk Croswell to tie the game at one. Forty-six seconds later, ISU forward Ryan Reid took a pass from Jon Feavel and took a slap shot that he nearly missed and scored to put the Cyclones ahead.

“I wound up for the big shot, and I got about 10 percent of what wanted on it,” Reid said. “ I tricked the goalie with a changeup I guess.”

At 12:25 into the first period, Reid and Feavel put another point on the board for the Cyclones. This time it was Feavel taking a pass from Reid and skating it right up to the net and sliding it past Croswell to give the Cyclones a 3-1 lead.

LU coach Rick Zombo pulled Croswell out of the game and replaced him with Trey Flesch who only played one game going into Saturday’s game. Cooper only allowed one goal for the Cyclones and stopped 8 of 9 LU shots in the first period.

Cooper stopped all 10 LU shots in the second period, which was uneventful except for a tripping penalty on ISU forward Derek Kohles and a slashing penalty on LU forward Joe Bostic.

The Cyclones added to their lead early in the third period. ISU defenseman Justin Wilkinson chipped a puck out of the zone and gave Chris Cucullu a breakaway. With a defender on his back, he decked around the goal and scored top shelf from his backhand to give the Cyclones a 4-1 lead, and that’s the way the game would end.

The Cyclones play next at the Central States Collegiate Hockey League Tournament next weekend hosted by Lindenwood. The Cyclones will play No. 4 Robert Morris on Feb. 15.
