A rivalry that has been absent for a couple years has been renewed.

After dropping a few spots in the rankings, the No. 15 ISU hockey team matched up against Iowa for the first time since Dec. 10, 2010.

The Cyclones (16-14-1-2) beat the Hawkeyes (13-17-0-1) by a score of 4-0 on Friday night. ISU goaltender Paul Karus stopped 24 shots for his second shutout of the season.

ISU forward Jon Toigo, a freshman made his debut for the Cyclones in Friday’s game against the Hawkeyes and started on a line with Trevor Lloyd and Joe Bueltel. Toigo didn’t expect to start the game and said it was a “nice surprise.”

“It was good to finally get out there,” Toigo said. “It was nice to get out there with a full crowd, too, on a rivalry week.”

Toigo scored his first point early with an assist by Lloyd 14:49 into the first period, but narrowly missed scoring his first goal after Lloyd set him up in the slot. Toigo said he couldn’t believe it after he missed the point on that setup.

“I had to go up and thank Trevor for the setup there. He was telling me how bad he wanted to shoot it, but he gave it to me to try to get my first goal. Too bad I let him down,” Toigo said.

ISU coach Al Murdoch said Toigo spent last semester studying at DMACC and is in his first semester of eligibility.

ISU freshman forward Austin Parle had three points (two goals, one assist) in Friday’s game against the Hawkeyes. One was a shorthanded goal in which he decked around a UI defenseman and the UI goaltender Jonathan Krueger.

“Usually when you’re shorthanded, you’re not really thinking about scoring; you’re just thinking about getting the puck deep and changing, getting some fresh guys out,” Parle said.
