Quarterback Jared Barnett and nickelback C.J. Morgan will transfer to schools of their choice, ISU coach Paul Rhoads announced on Friday morning.

Barnett was part of the quarterback carousel the past two seasons, jostling for a starting role with Steele Jantz and Sam Richardson. In his two seasons, Barnett started nine games with a 4-5 record, completing 162-of-328 passes for 1,825 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

“He’s got 13 FCS offers right now, but I don’t know which way,” said Duke Barnett, Jared’s father, in a phone interview with the Daily. “We just made the decision [Thursday night].”

Under NCAA rules, Barnett would not need to forfeit a year of eligibility and sit out one year if he transfers from an FBS to an FCS school.

Barnett’s most memorable moment was his leadership in Iowa State’s double-overtime victory against Oklahoma State in 2011. In that game, Barnett completed 36-of-58 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cyclones to their first-ever victory against a team ranked higher than No. 7 in the AP top 25 poll.

“Jared has had some great games in a Cyclone uniform and we will miss his character in the locker room and on the field,” Rhoads said in a news release. “We respect his decision.”

Morgan started two games this season, taking a backseat at the nickelback position to Deon Broomfield. Morgan said he will be transferring to a school closer to his hometown of Lake Wales, Fla.

“C.J. has some family health issues that have made him want to play somewhere near home,” Rhoads said. “Family is always first and we wish him the best.”
