The No. 13 ISU hockey team had a lot of penalties against No. 6 Ohio but still managed to win a 2-1 overtime thriller.

ISU forward Austin Parle scored the only goal of the first period from point-blank range after skating a pass from Georgi Iskernov to the front of the net. Scott Ismond stopped all eight Bobcat shots in the first period.

After a scoreless second period, the Bobcats finally got on the board with a goal from Jonathon Gultch. Tyler Pilmore notched the assist on the goal, which gave him his team-high 32nd point. That was the only goal of the third period.

The Cyclones dodged a bullet in overtime after Ohio failed to score on a breakaway caused in part by an untimely change for Derek Kohles. Ohio’s Jonathon Pietramala went to the penalty box for abuse of officials to give the Cyclones a four-on-three advantage which led to the game winner by Chris Cucullu.

Ismond stopped 34-of-35 Ohio shots in the game.

The Cyclones return to the Ames/ISU Ice Arena for a rematch against the Bobcats on Saturday night. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
