Dominguez shines in night of firsts for ISU soccer team

The ISU women’s soccer team hosted the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday, Oct. 5, at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones won the match 2-0. The win was the team’s first in Big 12 conference play. The match was the first at the new, $13 million Cyclone Sports Complex.

In a night of many firsts for the ISU soccer team — it was the first time playing in the Cyclone Sports Complex and the first time playing Texas Christian in a conference matchup — junior forward Jennifer Dominguez was doing the same old thing: scoring goals.

Dominguez, a former walk-on, scored her eighth and ninth goals of the season in Iowa State’s (9-6, 1-3 Big 12) 2-0 win against Texas Christian (5-7-1, 0-3) on Friday night.

“We came out of the gates really hard; it was awesome to see everyone work so hard to put them under pressure,” said senior defender Megan Longobardi. “It paid off when we got that early goal, which definitely gave us some momentum going forward.”

The first goal for Dominguez came in the fifth minute of play. The Cyclones are now 9-0 this season when scoring the first goal.

“She got us those two early goals, which is huge,” Longobardi said. “It was so awesome to see her come and put them in the back of the net like we know she can.”

Dominguez’s second goal on the night came in the 28th minute. Longobardi was awarded the assists for both of the goals.

“The looks that we were creating and the chances that we were creating for a number of different players is huge,” said ISU soccer coach Wendy Dillinger. “It’s something we need to continue moving forward.”

With her ninth goal on the season, Dominguez is tied for fourth in all-time goals in a season at Iowa State.

“[Records] are only important to get us recognition,” Dominguez said. “If that’s going to do it, putting me up in the stats, to get [Iowa State] recognition, then I’m all for it.”

Because of her high offensive output this season, Dominguez’s teammates said she is a valuable member of the team.

“She is a huge spark to our team. Her speed up top and just her tenacity going at the back and everything is so great for our team,” Longobardi said. “It gives everyone else momentum and pushes everyone else to work hard like her.”

Iowa State will continue its weekend of firsts with a game against West Virginia on Sunday. The game will mark the first matchup with the new Big 12 opponent and begins at 1 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
