Stoffa: Hypocrisy from the left as guests flip president the bird

Gabriel Stoffa

Hello gay community, and welcome to this week’s edition of “Disrespect.” This edition will focus on the highly disrespectful action of the two jackasses who chose to give the middle finger to a portrait of President Ronald Reagan in the White House.

I’ve waited a few days to see where the feeds, comments and even articles in papers from the gay community were, distancing itself from the two people flipping the bird, and the distancing isn’t appearing. I haven’t even seen it appearing on Facebook.

All I can say is, LGBT community, get off your ass and start with some statements declaring you do not approve of such disrespectful behavior and let it be known that actions of that sort will not go without chastisement.

Oh, and while we’re at it, how about trying to get those two yahoos to apologize to President Barack Obama for making him appear foolish. The man just came out in support of same-sex marriage. Even if you only consider it a campaign move, it remains a profound statement while in a race for the most powerful position in the United States.

And don’t try putting off dropping the equivalent of the f-bomb in the White House during a reception as nothing because of free speech. Matthew Hart, national director of public engagement at Solutions for Progress, and Zoe Strauss, photographer, were within the realm of Constitutional activities to express their dislike for Reagan due to his remaining silent about how dangerous AIDS was, but doing so as guests of a man trying to help the challenges facing the gay community is completely moronic.

C. Everett Koop, Reagan’s surgeon general, is a man to be angry at because he said, “Transmission of AIDS was understood to be primarily in the homosexual population and in those who abused intravenous drugs,” and later, “They are only getting what they justly deserve.”

Jerry Falwell, Southern Baptist pastor and televangelist, said, “AIDS is the wrath of God upon homosexuals.” While Pat Buchanan, Reagan’s communications director, said AIDS is “nature’s revenge on gay men.”

Reagan might have made the tragic error of listening to those asshats, but that is no reason to be so disrespectful during a White House event where you were invited as an “honored guest.”

Be angry at the entire country in the 1980s for ignoring the epidemic that AIDS became, as Reagan was elected for both terms with landslide records; essentially everyone of voting age is to blame.

To top it off, Hart posted the picture with the caption “Fuck Reagan” to his Facebook in what I can only understand to be a play for compliments from his like-minded, and probably as disrespectful, friends.

Hart even responded to Philadelphia Magazine with the quote, “Ronald Reagan has blood on his hands. The man was in the White House as AIDS exploded, and he was happy to see plenty of gay men and queer people die. He was a murderous fool, and I have no problem saying so. Don’t invite me back. I don’t care.”

Hey, LGBT supporters: Hart is exactly the kind of idiot you don’t want as a representative for you as you try to make less-enlightened folks aware that sexual preference should not limit rights. Oh, and Hart, when was it that Reagan expressed being happy about seeing people die? That’s right, Reagan didn’t say that. Reagan was no murderer or fool, his strategic defense initiative or “Star Wars” program aside.

So please, all you folks who support LGBT rights, please express your dislike of the actions of Hart and Strauss. Write letters to papers, tweet, post to Facebook, blog about it or even write an apology on your behalf to the president; just don’t remain silent. Don’t be hypocrites and attack those on the far right for hateful actions when your own representatives are acting like fools.
