Cyclones upset No. 14 Texas A&M

The ISU softball team was able to come away with an upset 2-1 victory against No. 15 Texas A&M (27-11, 7-3 Big 12) on Saturday to complete the final conference series between the two before A&M’s departure to the SEC.

The win marks first conference victory of the season for the Cyclones (12-24, 1-8) and the first against a ranked opponent at home since 2006 when they last beat No. 10 Texas.

The day began much different than the first day of competition as A&M pitcher Mel Dumezich, who had been dominant against the Cyclones in the first two games, looked like a different pitcher in the circle at the beginning of the game.

In the first inning, Dumezich walked four batters — three consecutively — giving the Cyclones the 1-0 lead.

That lead was quickly relinquished, however, as A&M quickly scored off an RBI double from first basemen Kelsea Orsak in the top of the third to even the game at 1-1.

Action slowed down in the game as neither team was able to get anything going in the next inning. It was then that the Cyclones’ designated player Sara Rice was able to hit an RBI double that scored a run putting Iowa State ahead 2-1.

The run proved to be the game-winner for the team as Iowa State was able to lead into the seventh before Tori Torrescano was able to get A&M’s left fielder Emily Albus to ground out to end the game.

Iowa State will resume competition again on Tuesday in Des Moines when it faces off against Drake. Action is set to begin at 4 p.m.
