The ISU softball team finished 2-1 this past weekend at the Gales Classic in Moraga, Calif.

The Cyclones (9-15, 0-0 Big 12) started their opening weekend of competition with a 9-4 loss to St. Mary’s (6-11, 0-0 PCSC).

Iowa State surrendered four two-run home runs with junior pitcher Tori Torrescano, who was replaced in the fifth inning but not before allowing six runs and four hits in her four innings of work.

Iowa State then faced Santa Clara (4-21, 0-0 PCSC) later in the day and was able to come away with a 6-2 victory.

Making her first-career start for the Cyclones was sophomore Taylor Smith, who took the mound and pitched all seven innings, giving up six hits and two runs.

Then on the final day of competition, the Cyclones again faced St. Mary’s, but this time were able to come away with a 9-3 victory against the familiar foe.

Torrescano once again proved to have the hot bat for Iowa State, going 3-for-3 with a walk while driving in four runs, including a home run in the contest as well.

But in the end, Torrescano’s pitching proved to be the difference for the Cyclones as the junior pitched six innings giving up four hits and two runs.

In the seventh inning, she was relieved by Breeanna Holliday, who pitched one inning allowing two hits and one run to seal the victory for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones will travel to Omaha, Neb., on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Creighton. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
