Softball team prepares for Northern Iowa

Iowa State will host Northern Iowa in Ames on Tuesady in a rematch from an earlier season contest.

The Cyclones (9-18, 0-3 Big 12) will try to rebound from a three-game weekend in which they were swept by No. 5 Texas.

“We can’t let [the Texas losses] get to us,” said pitcher/outfielder Madison Jones. “I think that’s one thing our team’s good at, is not letting all these losses get to us.”

Iowa State only lost by four runs in each of the first two games of the Texas series before losing 11-2 in the final game of the weekend trio of matchups.

“I think we have to take the positives from these games,” Jones said. “We have to focus on those and take them with us to the next game.”

The Cyclones were able to score nine combined runs against a Longhorns team that has a team ERA of 1.38. One of the runs in the game included a home run by infielder Erica Miller, which is only the eighth time this season an ISU hitter has sent a ball over the fence.

Iowa State will face a less potent but still dangerous pitching staff from the Panthers (20-9, 6-0 MVC), who have a team ERA of 2.68 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Cyclones faced Northern Iowa earlier in the fall and were able to come away with a 6-2 victory in the contest.

“I think [Northern Iowa is] really scrappy,” said coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler “And I think they play with an edge and if we don’t come in and take care of business, we’re not going to be successful.”

This will mark the fourth game in a five-game ISU homestand that began last Friday and will end Wednesday against Drake.

“We’ve seen their starting pitcher,” said pitcher Tori Torrescano. “She’s been there a couple of years and we know what she throws.”

The Cyclones lead the all-time series against the Panthers at 37-35-1. The team will look for similar results against its familiar foe as they attempt to break out of their three-game losing streak.

Action will begin in Ames at 4 p.m. at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
