Although the ISU hockey team’s season has come to end, the season will continue on for one more game on March 17 for captain Brian Rooney, a senior, junior defenseman Brandon Clark and ISU coach Al Murdoch.

Rooney and Clark have been selected to play in the ACHA All Star Game and Murdoch has been selected as one of the coaches.

“It’s an honor, there’s no question about it,” Murdoch said. “The honor to be able to be one of the head coaches is huge, even after all these years. I feel very privileged.”

Rooney and Clark heard about their selections to the game upon their arrival back in Ames after their loss in the second round of the ACHA National Tournament.

Clark finished the season No. 8 on the team in points with 24 (8 goals, 16 assists).

“He’s one of our top defensive defensemen, but at the same time he added a huge dimension on offense being our top point person among our defensive core,” Murdoch said. “Clark was also one of the co-captains.”

Rooney finished the season with 29 points (15 goals, 14 assists), which ranks No. 5 on the team this season. He has a career total of 78 points (37 goals, 41 assists) after four seasons with the Cyclones.

“He’s hit a high as far as points, his best year of his four years,” Murdoch said. “Playing solid at full strength, playing solid on penalty killing and he even logged some time this year on the power play, and that’s a good all-around player.”

Rooney is as honored to be a part of this game as Murdoch is.

“I’ve never had the opportunity to play in this game, and I know Iowa State as well as the other universities around the country had had some really great players play in this game,” Rooney said. “Guys have gone on to play pro and had really successful careers in the ACHA, so truthfully it’s an honor and a privilege to play in this game.”

The ACHA All Star Game is at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, at the Gilmour Academy Ice Complex in Gates Mills, Ohio.
