The ISU softball team will play a doubleheader against Creighton on Wednesday in Omaha, Neb.

The Cyclones (9-15, 0-0 Big 12) will try to defeat the Bluejays (11-11, 2-1 Missouri Valley) and build more momentum after a 2-1 outing this past weekend against Santa Clara and St. Mary’s at the 2012 Gaels Classic in Moraga, Calif.

“I thought we were a little up and down this past weekend,” said coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler. “But I think we just continue to get better and better.”

Iowa State played Creighton three times last year and were 2-1 in the series.

“We played them last year, so obviously we know a little bit about them,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “I think they are right around .500, but [as] with anything, you need to go into each game and do the best you can.”

The Cyclones are led by sophomore pitcher Tori Torrescano who already has six wins — one shy of her previous two years combined.

“I’ve played a fair amount against them the past two years,” Torrescano said. “I know they are usually pretty competitive and we have pretty good games against them.”

Iowa State will look to extend its two-game winning streak to a season-high four-game winning streak as well.

“They’re a scrappy team,” said senior Lauren Kennewell. “Just having all three things — pitching, hitting and defense — coming together [will be keys to victory]. We’ve had a difficult time getting all three of those, but I feel like this is we bring them together.”

Action is set to begin at 4 p.m.
