The ISU men’s and women’s track teams headed out to New York City this weekend for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, where they competed against schools from all over the nation and even Canada.

Competition was tough in the Big Apple this weekend, but that didn’t stop some athletes from taking top positions in their events.

On the men’s side, the Cyclones had sophomore Ryan Sander open the meet with a victory in the 60-meter hurdles. Sander won both the preliminary round and the division finals with a time of 8.24. Teddy Lampkin tied for second and Akeem Holmes placed fifth in the long jump.

Other notables were Rico Loy finishing third with a time of 4:02.55 in the men’s mile championship, Troy Walls placing fourth in the high jump, Daniel Gruber placing sixth in the 1000-meter run and Ian Warner placing sixth in the 60-meter dash preliminaries and seventh overall in the finals.

For the women, Jordon Andreassen placed ninth in the 60-meter hurdles. Krista Shoeman also placed ninth in the 500-meter dash with teammate Donnise Powell close behind in 13th place and Ejiro Okoro placed 10th in the 1000-meter run championship division.

The women were ranked No. 12 in the nation going into the New Balance Invitational. Updated rankings will be shown early next week.

Both men’s and women’s teams will compete in the Iowa State Open next weekend starting on Thursday.
