‘Hot laps’ at Iowa State Classic

The weather outside may have been cold, but the track itself was hot with national qualifiers and national record times at the Iowa State Classic this weekend.

The biggest news for the ISU women’s track and field team was Betsy Saina and Meaghan Nelson both qualifying for the Indoor Championships in the 5,000-meter run. Saina’s time of 15:36.09 is the fastest in the nation.

Other notables for the women were Krista Shoeman, who placed fourth in the women’s 600-yard dash with a time of 1:23.47, and Ejiroghene Okoro, who ran the 800-meter with a time of 2:09.14.

On the men’s side, Ian Warner won the men’s 60-meter dash early in the afternoon. Warner had finished second for the past two years and said a win this year felt great.

Other first-place titles belong to Teddy Lampkin in men’s long jump with a length of 23 feet 10 inches and Kianna Elahi in the 600 yard dash with a time of 1:20.14.

Both teams have next week off and will be preparing for the Indoor Championships in two weeks.
