Cyclones win both meets in South Dakota

The ISU swimming and diving team won both of its meets in South Dakota this weekend, improving to 3-1 on the season. The Cyclones dominated the weekend, defeating South Dakota and South Dakota State by a combined score of 429-170.

The Cyclones won 14 of 16 events on Friday night in Vermillion, S.D., defeating South Dakota 209-91.

The Cyclones received a strong performance from sophomore Imelda Wistey, who placed first in each of the four events in which she competed.

Wistey finished first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, with times of 1:13.51 and 2:42.29. She placed first in the 200-individual medley as well, with a final time of 2:26.56. She also helped her 200-medley relay team place first with a time of 2:01.11.

ISU freshman Elizabeth Kleiner had an impressive meet as well, placing first in both the 100 butterfly and 800 freestyle with times of 1:06.19 and 9:20.58. Kleiner also helped her 400-freestyle relay team finish second with a time of 4:04.77.

ISU senior diver Sarah Norris continued her solid start to the season on Friday, placing first in the 1-meter and second in the 3-meter with scores of 263.00 and 248.60.

The Cyclones took 14 of 16 events on Saturday afternoon as well, defeating South Dakota State by a final score of 220-79.

Iowa State received strong performances on Saturday from many of Friday night’s standouts.

Wistey, who earned four first-place finishes Friday night, did her best to repeat her performance Saturday.

Wistey placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.61, the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.32, and the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:10.29. She also helped her 200-medley relay team open the meet with a victory, touching in at a time of 1:47.76.

Kleiner also mirrored Friday night’s performance, placing first in each of her three events. Kleiner finished first in both the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle with times of 2:09.30 and 5:11.28. She also helped her 400-freestyle relay team place first with a time of 3:36.29.

ISU freshman Amanda Paulson placed first in two individual events in addition to helping both of her relay teams finish first. She won both the 50 and 100 freestyle with times of 24.27 and 53.95.

ISU sophomore diver Jessica Nicholson placed first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter with scores of 262.35 and 291.15.

The Cyclones return to the pool on Nov. 18 for the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
