The ISU soccer team’s 89 minutes and 58 seconds of shutout play Friday night wasn’t enough to secure a victory against No. 2 ranked Oklahoma State, which pulled away with a 1-0 victory.

Even though it wasn’t enough, ISU coach Wendy Dillinger said she was very pleased with what she saw at the ISU Soccer Complex on Friday.

“We did what we wanted to do tonight,” Dillinger said. “It’s heartbreaking for them to lose the game in the last few seconds of the game but overall I thought the effort was there, the opportunities were there. So I’m very proud of them for what they’ve done.”

For the Cyclones (6-6-1, 0-3 Big 12), freshman Ashley Swanson and the defense kept the Cowgirls (15-0, 4-0) off the scoreboard for the majority of the night. Senior co-captain Mary Kate McLaughlin said defender Jessica Stewart played a big role in doing so.

“Jessie [Stewart] watched film and saw what she liked to do and what she didn’t like to do,” McLaughlin said. “It was a team effort as well and we just communicated.”

Oklahoma State broke the tie after a pass from Krista Lopez on the side of the net ricocheted off a teammate’s foot into the goal as time expired.

While it is a game they need to forget about, McLaughlin said it’s one they need to learn from as well.

“We also have to learn from it and we have to remember that we have to stay disciplined for the entire 90 minutes and not just 89 minutes and 30 seconds,” McLaughlin said. “At the end of the game, the last 30 seconds there were at least four different times when we could have cleared the ball and we didn’t and we got punished for it and in the Big 12 against the No. 2 team in the nation, that’s what’s going to happen.”

Dillinger was quick to note that the team lost to Baylor two years ago because they came out ‘flat’ on a Sunday and lost 3-1 and said she reminded the team of that after the game.

“Two years ago when we played Texas A&M at home, we came out flat against Baylor on a Sunday and lost 3-1 and just reminded them of that and that we don’t want to have that same thing happen,” Dillinger said. “As tough as it is to lose a game like this, you have to rebound.”

Last week, the Cyclones had a bye and a big focus was on attacking. Sophomore forward Jennifer Dominguez, who led the team in shots for the second-straight game, said they just have to keep doing what they did Friday night.

“For the rest of the Big 12 season, I think we just have to continue,” Dominguez said. “We came out today and we battled, we competed, we were physical, we were disciplined mentally and we were being smart in our decision-making and that just has to carry over regardless if it’s the number two team in the country or not.”

The Cyclones will try again to get their first conference victory on Sunday against Baylor at the ISU Soccer Complex at 5 p.m.
