A two-game suspension was levied on an unnamed Iowa State men’s basketball assistant coach last season for secondary violations.

According to a report by the Associated Press, an assistant men’s basketball coach used his frequent-flyer miles to pay for a student athlete’s round-trip airfare from Des Moines to Atlanta.

The infraction, which Iowa State reported to the NCAA, was committed under former Cyclone basketball coach Greg McDermott.

Iowa State imposed the two-game suspension on itself. After reviewing the incident, the NCAA agreed with the school’s decision and did not bring down further punishment.

The punishment did not take place until this past season because ISU officials did not learn of the incident until December 2010.

Current ISU coach Fred Hoiberg was not on staff when the violation was committed.

Iowa State spokesman Mike Green said that the athletic department did not have a statement to release on the matter and that none of the coaching staff was available for comment.
