Wariner adds another Drake Relay title to resume

Jeremy Wariner added yet another Drake Relay title to his belt, winning the 400-meter hurdles at the Drake Relays on Saturday.

He finished with a time of 45.19

Wariner has three olympic gold medals to go along with his four Drake Relay titles. He is the reigning No. 1 400-meter runner in the world and has won the event twice in the last three years.

The mixture of the sold out crowd and nice weather conditions got Wariner’s juices flowing.

“I just wanted a better race than last week,” Wariner said. “Last week week at Baylor we had a 35-mile per hour cross wind, so it wasn’t fun. I executed a lot better today and was happy with my time.”

Wariner, a native of Irving, Tex., took control of the race from the sound of the pistol. He quickly moved ahead of the pack once they came out of the first turn.

“Coming down the backstretch, I felt really comfortable,” Wariner said. “I noticed I was up on Greg Nixon so quick that I didn’t know if I was going too fast or not. When I came out of the turn, I had no idea where anyone was so I just concentrated on the finish line.

Wariner has switched up his training this season because he is coming off of a base year. He went for a base year last year due to having a surgery the year before. He also battled a bruise on the left knee.

Wariner has two more events scheduled after Drake and is hoping to hit the 44-second mark.

He has also been appreciative of the support he and his alma mater, Baylor, have received at the Relays. Wariner is sponsored by Adidas, so he can have more freedom to where he chooses to race. That support drove him to choose the Drake Relays over the Penn Relays.

The Penn Relays are a Nike-sponsored event.

“This meet has always been extremely supportive,” Wariner said. “The fans always come out and watch, no matter what the weather is. You don’t get that a lot in the U.S., unfortunately. Hopefully, the rest of the meets can feed off this and the Penn Relays.”
