Cyclones struggle offensively, go 3-2 on weekend

Cyclone softball pitchers shined despite inconsistent production on offense this weekend at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic while playing games in Charleston and Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The team went 3-2 on the weekend, and gave up just six runs in five games.

Freshman Bree Holliday picked up the second win of her career Friday against Marist, allowing just one run on four hits in four innings of work. Holliday was relieved for one inning by Tori Torrescano, who gave up no runs on one hit. Five innings was all the Cyclones needed as they run-ruled Marist for a decisive 10-1 victory.

Cyclone ace Rachel Zabriskie threw her second shut-out of the season in a 3-0 victory over the Liberty as she pitched all seven innings of action. Zabriskie rang up 12 batters for strikeouts, just one shy of tying the all-time ISU record for strikeouts in a game.

On Saturday the Cyclones ran into an undefeated Notre Dame team. A defensive battle ended in 0-1 Fighting Irish victory that moved Notre Dame to 7-0 on the season. Zabriskie picked up the loss for the Cyclones despite six innings of work in which she allowed just one run on four hits against Notre Dame, a team that is batting .313 and averaging better than five runs a game on the year.

A game that was scheduled for 7 p.m. against Drexel got a late start Saturday, and the teams were only able to get in five innings action before it was decided to play out the final two innings Sunday morning.

Holliday got the start for the Cyclones but was replaced by Torrescano after giving up a run in the first inning and putting two runners on base early in the second.

Torrescano pitched until the game was post-poned in the fifth. She gave up one unearned run on a fielding error but allowed no hits.

When play was resumed Sunday, Zabriskie took the mound and struck out five of the remaining six batters, while allowing no hits.

In the final game of the weekend, the Cyclones faced the Charleston Cougars. Zabriskie pitched all six innings, giving up just one earned run on four hits. The Cougars scored a key additional unearned run in the fifth inning on an error, which would prove to be the difference in 1-2 Cougar victory. The loss moved the Cyclones to 9-6 on the year.

The Cyclones are back in action next weekend in Tulsa, Okla. where they will face Ohio State, Tulsa, North Dakota and Drake.
