Cyclones survive scare against Valparaiso

The Valparaiso Crusaders accomplished something no team had done since the inaugural game of the Cyclone Indoor Invitational: Last seven innings with the Cyclones.

Iowa State edged the Crusaders in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader, 11-4.

Rachel Zabriskie took to the mound for the first time since her 13 strikeout performance against Creighton on Friday night. However, the ace struggled against Valparasio, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. In spite of that, Zabriskie still managed to collect 11 strikeouts.

The Crusaders put up three runs in the fifth inning but the Cyclone’s offensive onslaught kept them on top. Familiar faces powered the offense, with Bianca Lopez going 4-for-4 with three runs and Heidi Kidwell also crossing home plate three times.
