Coming to college can be scary but exciting at the same time. Finding ways to get involved and truly feel a part of Iowa State is a great way to feel more comfortable and at home at your new school.

One way to do this is to join one or more of the many clubs at Iowa State for whatever hobbies or events you enjoy.

Into athletics? There is a large intramural program at Iowa State for many sports, such as soccer, flag football, table tennis, 2-pitch softball and more.

There are also club sports if you want to be more involved, such as club soccer, basketball, cycling, lacrosse, volleyball and more. Additionally, there are group workout classes at the two gyms, Lied Recreation Center and State Gym.

“I really love going to my boxing classes; you get a great workout and I have made good friends through it,” said Christina Kugel, senior in apparel, merchandising and design.

If you are into dancing, Dub H is a great club for that. Dub H is one of the largest student-run clubs at Iowa State.

“I’d say what I’d tell all my freshmen when I was a DIS team leader,” said Kristen Enriquez, senior in political science and Dub H exec board member. “Join a club that’s about something you’re familiar with, and join a club that’s about something you’ve never tried.”

There are also clubs for the different majors and just about anything you may find interest in.

Another tip for your time at Iowa State is to pay close attention to your credits and make a four-year plan for graduation. You may not graduate in four years but having a laid out plan can help prevent confusion. You don’t want to reach the end and realize you missed a class. That is what advisers are for, so make sure you work with them and make a good plan, even if you are unsure about what you want to major in.

You may not know what direction you want to go in or you may know exactly what you want to do. Either way, Iowa State can accommodate you and what you enjoy. Don’t be afraid to reach out.

Making friends and connections is a great way to start your time here.
