Coach Kevin Jackson announced Friday that former NCAA champion and Cyclone Eric Voelker will be joining Jackson’s coaching staff this year as an assistant coach.

Jackson confirmed Voelker’s new position on his staff Friday while also announcing that Yero Washington, who was an assistant last year under Jackson, would be named head assistant coach.

“We are excited about Eric Voelker joining our coaching staff,” Jackson said in a news release. “I have known Eric since our days at Iowa State. He brings great personal knowledge of wrestling and extensive experience working with young people on and off the mat.”

Voelker, who was a two-time NCAA champion at 190 pounds in 1987 and 1989, is taking over for Chris Bono, who resigned in June to pursue other opportunities.

Voelker and Jackson were teammates during the 1987 season, leading the Cyclone wrestling program to its last national title.

“I am anxious to get started helping our student-athletes to succeed at the next level academically and as a wrestler,” Voelker said. “We have a great head coach in Kevin Jackson, and the rest of our staff is positioned to develop young men in the wrestling program.”

Voelker’s nephew, Trevor, is a 197-pound freshman on the team.
