Letter: Park51 mosque response

Sophie Prell

If some Wicks are Slicks, and some Slicks are Snicks, then are some Wicks definitely Snicks?.

I remember reading questions like these ever since sixth grade, but apparently Brandon Blue skipped these logic-testing questions.

In his column about the proposed Park51 mosque and Islamic community center, he writes: “In [Daisy] Khan’s mind, Park51’s supporters are all good people, even this gentleman, because they’re Democrats. And all the protesters are bad, on merit of all being Republicans.”

I found this paragraph particularly enlightening. I had no idea ESP was being utilized as a journalistic resource.

See, Khan never said anything about all supporters being good, let alone all of them being Democrats. Likewise, the man in the video Brandon describes is never identified by his political affiliation, nor is the Holocaust survivor.

The entire situation is done a great disservice by Brandon, who seems to portray it as little more than another Democrat vs. Republican spat, a chance to say “Na na na na boo boo, stick your head in doo-doo.”

In other words Brandon, Khan’s not saying the things you write about, you are. And if you’ve nothing better to say when weighing in on this topic, then you’re missing the point.

And now, to come back full-circle, let me ask everyone: If some Democrats are supporters of the Park51 mosque, and some supporters of the Park51 mosque are intolerant, loudmouth jerks, are Democrats definitely intolerant, loudmouth jerks?

And keep in mind you can just as easily turn that around, replacing “Democrats” with “Republicans” and “supporters” with “opponents.”

Now I’m sure I’ll regret phrasing my question the way I did in this, the age of journalism where Internet trolls are given their own TV shows, but hopefully someone out there can think about that honestly and realize both sides have a long way to go before we’re ready to discuss the extent of religious freedom vs. sensitivity to a tragic history.
