Cyclones beat Jayhawks 2-0 in Big 12 opener

The Cyclones bounced back from Friday’s loss to South Dakota State on Sunday and started their Big 12 season on the right foot, beating Kansas 2-0 at the ISU Soccer Complex.

Both sides played a solid defensive first half, having only three shots on goal combined and few scoring opportunities.

32 minutes into the first half, Jayhawk sophomore forward Whitney Berry gave Kansas their best chance at a goal when she fielded a free kick but Iowa State freshman keeper Maddie Jobe made a diving save to keep the score tied. It was her only save of the game.

Iowa State out-shot Kansas four to two on the half and had two corner kicks to Kansas’s one.

Iowa State was able to keep the defensive pressure up in the second half as well as push across a pair of goals to seal the game.

The first goal came off the foot of freshman defender Jessica Stewart in the 49th minute, the first of her collegiate career. Freshman forward Jennifer Dominguez got the assist after Kansas keeper Kat Liebetrau failed to clear the ball out of the box.

Dominguez was back in on the action 10 minutes later, when she got her second assist of the game.

Dominguez took a shot from the left side of the goal and freshman midfielder Emily Goldstein flicked it in for a 2-0 lead that wouldn’t change for the remainder of the game.

Cyclone senior keeper Ashley Costanzo played her first full half since her injury Aug. 27 against Montana, and registered one save as well.
