YEAR IN REVIEW: Cyclones tie record for most Big 12 victories

Dan Tracy —

Following a season in which they ended a 79-match losing streak against Big 12 opponents, the Cyclones began the 2009-10 campaign under second-year coach Armando Espinosa with a slate of five tournaments to begin the fall season.

The team split up to travel to both the Gopher Invitational and Drake Invitational for the first weekend of the season. At the Gopher Invitational, the Cyclones were led by junior Liza Wischer and senior Alyssa Palen who both went 3-1 in singles play. Sophomore Maria Macedo and freshman Jenna Langhorst started their season strong at Drake, winning their first four matches of the season to claim singles titles at the event.

The next weekend, while the rest of the Cyclones traveled to the Jayhawk Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., returning All-Big 12 performer junior Erin Karonis headed to Norman, Okla., for the ITA Regional Championships.

Junior Reka Kelemen won all four of her singles matches in Lawrence, claiming a singles title for the Cyclones while Karonis was defeated in the second round after in Norman following a victory over Nebraska’s Abigail Buxton, 6-4, 6-1. The final tournament of the fall came in Kalamazoo, Mich., where the Cyclones played in the WMU Super Challenge. Playing a total of 37 matches over the three-day tournament, the Cyclones finished up the fall season led by Macedo’s 9-2 record in singles and Wischer and Palen’s 5-1 record in doubles.

After two months away from competition, the Cyclones kicked off non-conference play, falling to the No. 69-ranked Minnesota Gophers 4-3. Two weeks later, the team trekked down to Florida where it beat UTEP and were defeated by North Florida. Returning to the Midwest, the Cyclones went on a four-match winning streak, defeating Drake, Illinois-Chicago, Northern Iowa and Marquette before falling to Iowa, 7-0 in Iowa City. On its final road trip of the non-conference season, Iowa State headed to Virginia where the Cyclones lost 5-2 to No. 68 Old Dominion and 6-1 to No. 29 VCU.

Heading into Big 12 play at 5-5 overall, the Cyclones hoped to improve on their 1-10 finish in the Big 12 from a year ago. Following a 7-0 sweep by No. 6-ranked Baylor, Iowa State returned home to host its first matches of the season. The South Ames Racquet and Fitness Center would prove to be a friendly environment for the Cyclones as they defeated non-conference opponents Cleveland State and South Dakota and upset Big 12 foes Missouri and No. 52-ranked Colorado.

Already having tied the program record for most Big 12 wins in a season with two, the Cyclones fell short in their bid for a third win the next weekend with narrow 4-3 losses to both Kansas and Kansas State. The next six opponents for the Cyclones would all be ranked amongst the nation’s top 100 teams and would all come out on top as Iowa State finished the regular season on an eight-match losing streak.

Karonis, Macedo and Wischer all finished the spring season with 11 singles victories and Macedo lead the team in singles overall with a 20-13 record. Macedo and sophomore Tessa Lang led the doubles pairings with a 12-9 record in the spring and 16-11 record overall for the year playing at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

The Cyclones’ season ended at the hands of the Cowgirls in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament on Thursday. Oklahoma State beat Iowa State 4-1. TheCyclones finished with 9-15 overall and 2-10 in Big 12 play.
