This week, 22 people were told their jobs had been eliminated or were in the process of being eliminated in the College of Engineering at Iowa State.

All of the cuts were made to the administrative and support staff position lines in the college.

The college will be eliminating no faculty positions, and just gave promotions to three tenured faculty members and promoted six faculty members to associate professors with tenure positions, according to the 2010-2011 list of approved faculty .

These changes are the first of several aimed to reduce the college’s budget by more than 1 million dollars in response to severe cuts in state appropriations to the university, according to the press release.

Since July of 2008 the College of Engineering has experienced cuts totaling $7,194,000, according to its recent budget and planning report. The projected state appropriation to the college for FY 2011 will be $3,044,000 lower than that of FY 2010.

The college will also be allocating funds received from differential tuition revenue directly to the academic departments based on their enrollment, while at the same time eliminating special course fees for about two dozen courses, according to its budget and planning report.
