Action movie director looks to top previous feats

Anthony Capps

From the man who gave us the movies “Independence Day,” “Godzilla” and “The Day After Tomorrow,” Roland Emmerich, “http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1190080/“>2012” looks like it could top his previous movies when it comes to special effects.

Inspired by the idea of a worldwide doomsday coinciding with the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar on December 21, 2012, the movie is about Jackson Curtis (John Cusack), a divorced father, and his ex-wife Kate (Amanda Peet), who lives with her boyfriend.

Meanwhile, a secret organization builds arks under the Himalayan mountains to save the human race, certain species and important treasures.

But as the global cataclysm arrives faster than expected, goverments rush to save the human race.

As cracks are found within the California fault lines, Jackson hurries to Kate’s home to save his family.

Her boyfriend (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0565336/“>Thomas McCarthy) pilots the family to safety as Santa Monica and Los Angeles turn to rubble.

The supervolcano in Yellowstone National Park erupts, earthquakes destroy Rio de Janeiro, Washington D.C. is hit by a tsunami and St. Peter’s Basilica crumbles.

As destruction sweeps the planet, the U.S. government declares the end of the world.

The idea here: Lots of special effects are used as lots of cities are leveled.

Jackson, his family and other survivors must reach the Himalayas to save themselves.

Danny Glover portrays the president though President Barack Obama will still be in office December 2012.

Emmerich is also responsible for “10,000 B.C.,” “The Patriot” and “Stargate.”
