SOCCER: Cyclones fall in season finale

David Merrill —

Nebraska’s ‘golden goal’ sank the Cyclones in the first period of extra time as the Cyclones’ season ended with a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Cornhuskers Friday night in Lincoln, Neb.

Iowa State was able to keep the Huskers at bay early as it took them to the locker room at halftime with 0-0 on the scoreboard.

Sophomore midfielder Mary Kate McLaughlin started the scoring in the 63rd minute off the foot of freshman forward Amanda Woelfel. The goal came on one of the Cyclones’ coveted set pieces that Woelfel and McLaughlin have become so skilled at over the course of the season.

Nebraska answered back in the 72nd minute off a corner kick from senior defender Anna Caniglia who connected with sophomore defender Blair Slapper, drawing the score even at 1-1.

Nebraska put an end to the game on the ‘golden goal’ rule seven minutes into the first overtime period when sophomore forward Molly Thomas crossed the ball into the box for senior forward Lauren Isenhower, who headed it past ISU senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason.

The Cyclones finish the season at 7-9-4.
